SCAR & MEDAL OF HONOR:

The week before Ryan's graduation he did a heroic and selfless act, while putting himself in a dangerous situation and he eventually ended up with a severe injury. Which made him qualify for the NYPD medal of honor.
After graduation Ryan was supposed to go straight to work as he had been offer a spot in the NYPD prior to his graduation. And so the captain of his station found a loophole and wanted to award Ryan the medal as soon as he graduated. Even tho the act was performed before Ryan being an actual cop.
So during Ryan's graduation ceremony he received the medal as well. 

This is what happened:
It started with Ryan going out one night with his friends, they went to a sports bar to watch a soccer game with their team playing. Ryan is not really interested in sports, but he doesn't mind to have a few beers and play some pool with his friends. So he went with them to hang out.
After the game they all split up to head home, since they live in different parts of New York.
Alone on a Saturday night Ryan walk through South Bronx on his own, because he lived in a cheap apartment close to the bar. He takes the walk that lays next to the river, since he likes that route, and as he walks past an abandoned ironwork factory he caught sight of a gang with 5 guys and 1 distressed looking woman. 
Ryan heard "Stop! Get off me!" and saw the men pushing her in the direction of the entrance to the building, and realized that something was horribly wrong. 
Ryan picked up his phone and pushed in 911, so that he could dial the police immediately if he needed to. But he wanted to check it out first, to make sure.

Ryan sneaked inside after making sure that no of the guys was still around the entrance. And eventually he ended up by the docking area, where the 5 guys was forcing the now tied woman into the back of a truck. Inside there were 8 other women that was also tied up and blindfolded. After listening to the guys talking Ryan quickly realized that the men was sex traffickers that had kidnapped the women.
In a mild panic he made up a plan to steal the truck and drive the vehicle with the women inside to the closest police station. But he had to figure out how to do that without getting caught or endanger the women.

Ryan decided that the safest way was to take out the guys before taking the truck, to avoid getting shot at while he driving away which would hurt him and the victims. 
Ryan is 21 at this point, and although he wasn't as muscular as he is now, he still weighted over 100 kilograms at that age. Therefore he was confident that he could overtake the criminals, as long as they didn't group up on him. Or had weapons.
Ryan needed to take them out individually and quietly. So he made his way around the shipping boxes in the big docking area, and managed to take out two of the smaller guys by choke hold as he surprised them from behind.(One at a time.)
While attempting to do the same on the third criminal, he was detected by the remaining two. 
The biggest guy grabbed an axe that was leaning against a wall to arm himself. Which was fitting! Because the big guy looked a lot like a lumberjack.
Ryan choked the third guy to completion before he dropped the unconscious guy to the floor, and as he did he only remembered the steely swoosh sound of the axe.
Ryan jerked back and luckily avoided getting his head split open as the sharp axe left a deep gush from his forehead to his cheek. He saw a flash of red before one of his eyes blacked out completely, and it was then that he realized that the axe had hit him and sliced over his right eye.
The cut in the end needed 50 stitches.
But Ryan wasn't in pain, probably because of adrenaline. He only felt warmth from that side of the face as he looked down to see his own blood and the axe embedded into the unconscious guy's chest. 
The axe got stuck in the rib cage of the presumably dead criminal and the lumberjack man attempted to pull it off several times, but it only lifted the dead guy along with it.
This gave Ryan a chance to regroup, and he turned to run back in between one of the rows of the piled boxes. But the last guy had a gun and managed to shoot Ryan in the leg before he disappeared behind the boxes. However Ryan wouldn't notice that he got shot until later at the hospital.

Ryan managed to find a roll of duct tape while zigzagging the box rows. He knew he had to do something fast, or it was a high chance that the criminals would get in the truck and make a run for it.
So the remaining two criminals was startled when a bleeding Ryan suddenly jumped out on them and grabbed the wrist of the smaller guy that held the pistol and Ryan dug his thumb into the median nerve of his wrist, which forced the criminal to drop the gun. Ryan kicked the gun away and it slid into a sea of packing peanuts which gave him more time.
Ryan still held on the wrist and he wrapped the duct tape around it for 3 laps before the guy reacted by trying to land a punch on him. 
Ryan was prepared for that all along and he dropped the taped wrist to instead grab the wrist of the hand that was trying to punch him. He quickly forced the guys both wrists somewhat close and taped them together in a quick and messy manner. 
He let go of the tape roll and let it hang as he easily picked up the smaller guy to lift him up to an industrial hook which was hanging from the ceiling. It snapped into place around the tape on his wrists and Ryan clicked a button on a remote on the wall next to him and then watched how the guy helplessly left the ground while yelling out something in Spanish.

When Ryan turned to the last and the biggest of the guys he saw him looking for the gun in the ridiculous big pile of packing peanuts.
Ryan took a chance and decided to make a run for it, since the guy didn't have a weapon and was busy with trying to get one.
Ryan successfully made it to the truck and thanked God that the keys were in the ignition. He started the truck and drove as fast as he could out of there, and when he could't see the building any longer he picked up his phone and dialed 911 to let them know what had happened and gave the address so that they could send police officers to arrest the guys, as well as sending medical help to save the guy with the axe in his chest. He was probably dead already, but Ryan didn't want to say that he didn't try to help him.

Ryan hung up as soon as he had given the important information to the dispatcher, because he was in no condition to talk. He was feeling dizzy from the loss of blood and his hands were shaking from the shock and from adrenaline.
It was then that he noticed a hatch on the wall between the two seats. He slid it to the side and as he opened it he could hear the women gasp in unison.
Ryan told them that they were on their way to the police and that they were safe now, and that feeling of pride and accomplishment he got from helping these women is what fuels him as a cop to this day.

50 stitches and one eye surgery later, he was all fixed up and got some well deserved rest at the hospital. ♥
